Placed by Witt as Italian, ca. 1600; by Oberhuber as Florentine, in the Vasari circle; and by Pouncey as possibly Sienese. Somewhat resembles an anonymous sheet in the Ashmolean (Macandrew 1980, cat. no. 61-4, repr. pl. 5). According to Professor Herwarth Röttgen (letter to the author, 14 August 1984), the iconography of Daedalus and Icarus with the prominent fishermen and boat is very unusual. This sheet and BCMA 1811.56 and BCMA 1811.54 bear old inscriptions referring to John Smibert's ownership (see History of the Collection, Becker, 1985).
Commentary credited to David P. Becker (or not otherwise captioned) appeared in his catalogue Old Master Drawings at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ College (Brunswick: ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ College Museum of Art, 1985).
