Serving Under-Supported Middle School Students
By Sophie Cullen ‘26My role as External Relations Intern consisted of three main parts: Teaching a Journalism class, promoting community outreach, and leading a committee focused on public relations.
Breakthrough Santa Fe is a not-for-profit educational access organization that works with students in grades 7-12. Specifically, Breakthrough Santa Fe "supports motivated public middle school students whose identities have been historically excluded from higher education on their path to college."
From managing the organization's social media, to preparing my committee for our annual Career Day event, my job duties this summer helped build my marketing, project management, and team management skills.
Working at Breakthrough Santa Fe made me appreciate the creativity needed to promote an educational organization's benefits and successes to the broader surrounding community. I also enjoyed leading our public relations committee towards successfully achieving our assigned initiatives and events, as well as working with outside professionals who donated their time for our students.
This summer taught me the importance of showing recognition to others, especially when leading a team. I also learned the importance of time management and setting expectations for the students I was teaching and the team of colleagues I led. On the technical side, I learned how to use Canva, which made many parts of my job easier.
Internship funded by the Yeu/Nigro Endowed Internship Fund.
