Last Thursday evening, musicians Adam Gardner (), Dave Schneider (), Shawn Fogel, Daniel Saks, and Tim Walsh lit up the stage in Smith Union’s Morrell Lounge as they joined the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ community for the first night of Hanukkah.
After a brief discussion with Margaret Boyle, associate professor of Romance languages and literatures, and Rabbi Carolyn Braun, of in Portland, and singing of the traditional Hanukkah blessing while lighting the menorah, The LeeVees launched into a nearly two-hour set of their most popular tunes, several of which had been featured in a performance on an earlier NPR’s .
Students, faculty, and local community members old and young enjoyed free latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts), and dancing to songs with titles like "Latke Clan," "Applesauce vs. Sour Cream," and "How Do You Spell Channukkahh?"
The sold-out event was co-sponsored by the Harry Spindel Memorial Lecture Fund, the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ College’s Rachel Lord Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, and the Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies Program.
