About
Chicago-based conceptual artist Anne Wilson’s digital video "Errant Behaviors" of 2004 uses fragments of black lace and crocheting, bits of unraveling thread, and map pins, and choreographs them in humorous, vulnerable, pitiable, and sometimes suggestive manners to composer Shawn Decker’s soundtrack. The enormously enlarged fragments of thread are hardly recognizable as such but indicate rather anthropomorphized plants, insects, bacteria and other strange tiny creatures that move on a sparse white background as if on view under a microscope. Traditional textile practices like crocheting and lace-making at first seem conceptually and technically incompatible with high-tech, computer-manipulated digital video making. But as the artist has observed and shown in Errant Behaviors, the sequential handcrafting used to make animated film is remarkably similar to how lace is made.
