A selection of colonial and federal paintings from the Museum's rich American collection is on view in the Zuckert Summer Gallery. This installation features work by the foremost artists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, as well as some by unidentified individuals, accompanied by period furnishings. Among the artists represented are Gilbert Stuart, Rembrandt Peale, and Joshua Johnson, a freed slave who was the first African-American to earn his living as a painter.
