About
This installation is organized to accompany Comediennes, Historians, Storytellers, a first-year seminar on women filmmakers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. As directors experiment with a variety of film genres they create images of women that work in dialogue with “the ideal woman” propagated in popular culture. They may invite us to see how an image is staged, permitting us to glimpse the fictive nature of such representations. Through a selection of photographs presented alongside key cinematic clips, this installation encourages you to consider the ways that films and photographs provoke us. It is apparent that the relationships among women as image-makers, subjects, and audiences move beyond simple identification.
