About
A painter, photographer, and video artist, William Wegman is not afraid to be funny; he does not see humor as undermining his arch conceptualism. Indeed, Wegman deploys the earnest “aesthetic of the amateur” to wry effect. Belonging to a genealogy of artists that includes Man Ray, the Surrealist for whom his first Weimaraner dog was named, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Ed Ruscha, Wegman is similarly known for his work across media. He first experimented with video in 1969 while teaching at the University of Wisconsin, and switched to color video in 1977. Fly-Fishing and W-O-O-D, the two films comprising Made in Maine, show Wegman doing what he does best – subverting rigorous and methodical behavior with vagueness and contradiction.
