About

This selection of Joyce-related films was organized in conjunction with the campus-wide “Ulysses Project.” Many individuals have characterized Joyce’s literature as cinematic in its technical operations, language, and point of view. Included in this “montage” are excerpts from films contemporary with Joyce’s Ulysses, an adaptation of the novel, and a documentary short that uses photographs to frame the Dublin that the author so lavishly memorialized.

Faithful Departed (1987), directed by Kieran Hickey. Photographs of Joyce’s Dublin (10:21 minutes).

Battleship Potemkin (1925), directed by Sergei Eisenstein. The famous “Odessa Steps” sequence (6:45).

Un Chien Andalou (1929), directed by Luis Buñuel. Surrealism’s classic, referencing Freudian dream work (15:33).

Ulysses (1967), directed by Joseph Strick. Excerpts from the “Circe” (12.39) and “Penelope” (13:20) episodes.
