Volpe Summer Research Fellowship in Digital and Computational Studies

The generous support of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ alumnus Michael Volpe (1997) has created a fellowship designed to support 8-10 weeks of student summer research under the mentorship of a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ faculty member in Digital and Computational Studies. While the projects are independent, students are encouraged to identify research topics that fall under the umbrella of existing faculty research portfolios or would address an emerging area of interest for the program. Students will gain firsthand experience with the research design process, data creation, analysis, and communication. In Summer 2025, the fellowship will provide an award of $600 per week and subsidized college housing if applicable. Students are encouraged to talk with their DCS faculty about their ideas for the application, but as part of our anti-racist initiatives to remove systemic barriers to opportunities, we do not solicit recommendations or nominations. We are grateful to Professor Meredith McCarroll for her counsel in this process.

DCS will accept 1-2 students per summer until at least 2027.

Requirements for Volpe DCS Fellowships

Fellows are expected to commit 8, 9, or 10 weeks of full-time effort during the summer toward the completion of their proposed project and refrain from employment during the period of their appointment. While there is some flexibility, you will work with your faculty mentor to create a schedule and regular check-ins.

You will need to live in Maine for the duration of the fellowship.

Reporting Requirements

Award recipients are required to submit two things by the first day of classes following their fellowship: a copy of their research and a 1-page report. The report should following the guidelines of the Office of Student Fellowships and Research. For details see their page: Final Report Information. Volpe DCS fellows are expected to participate in the President’s Summer Research Symposium in the fall after their research is completed.

  • To the Academic Coordinator for DCS: a copy of the research and the 1-page report (PDF). Elements of the report may be used in DCS public communications in the future.
  • To Gina Pappas: a copy of the 1-page report (PDF). This will be posted on the Office of Student Fellowships and Research website.
