Shift Differentials
Date: April 2024
Policy: The College initially established shift differentials to help recruit and compensate employees who are required, as part of their regular positions, to work schedules which fall outside of our standard work week in order to provide services 24/7/365 in a residential college environment. The College recognizes that working these positions may be challenging – employees must work and adjust to schedules that are different than those of their family members and friends – and therefore, provides additional compensation in the form of shift differentials. Shift differentials are for defined groups of employees or job classes only, that do not work standard College business hours
Employees who are regularly scheduled to work the College’s standard office hours (8:30 am – 5:00 pm) or other standard work hours (7:00 am – 6:00 pm) during a standard work week (Monday – Friday) are not eligible to receive a shift differential. This includes employees who work in administrative offices, Facilities Management shops and warehouse, Information Technology and Audiovisual Services and most of the Library. Even though these employees may occasionally be asked to work early or late on weekdays to meet College needs, they are not eligible for a shift differential.
Some jobs/services on campus must be provided 24/7 or during evening or weekend hours.
Employees in some areas of Security, Facilities Management (Housekeeping, Power Plant, Motor Pool, arena and sports facilities, fleet scheduling) and Dining Service have three standard shifts:
Shift 1 (7:00 am – 3:00 pm); Shift 2 (3:00 pm – 11:00 pm); and Shift 3 (11:00 pm – 7:00 am).
There are other employees in the Library, Audio Visual Services, Instructional Technology and Facilities Management who have alternate work arrangements or work shifts outside of the daily normal hours of operation. They are also eligible for shift differential as follows:
Shift 1 (7:00 am – 6:00 pm); Shift 2 (6:00 pm – 11:00 pm); and Shift 3 (11:00 pm – 7:00 am).
Second shift differential is 10% of the hourly rate. Third shift differential is 15% of the hourly rate. Employees who are required to work a weekend day as part of their regular schedule or at the request of their supervisor (e.g., special events) receive an additional $1.00 per hour as a weekend differential. The weekend differential is paid for hours worked from 12:00:00 am (midnight) Saturday morning to 11:59:59 pm Sunday night. The weekend differential of $1.00 is included in the hourly rate eligible for the second and third shift differentials.
