Pre-Departure

Students will make the most of their time away if they research their location, stay on top of tasks and requirements, anticipate differences and challenges, and continually reassess their goals for studying off-campus.

In this section, you will find information on Health and Safety and a wide variety of other important topics in our Pre-Departure Guide as you prepare for your time off-campus. The OCS Office will also cover this information in pre-departure information sessions in the semester before your time away. As you review these topics, keep these questions in mind:

  • How do you adapt to change? To new communities? To new modes of learning?
  • How comfortable are you with ambiguity?
  • When have you encountered difference? How did you navigate it?
  • What is your risk tolerance?
  • How do you take care of yourself? Who will be in your support network?
  • How do you manage logistical tasks, requirements, and deadlines?
Your success in off-campus study depends on you continually checking in with yourself, reassessing expectations, appreciating difference, and when needed, asking for support.
