Matilda White Riley Independent Studies Award
This award is given annually to the best independent study project(s) in sociology. The purpose of the Independent Studies Award is to recognize and encourage excellence in sociological research and writing. All forms of research and writing are welcomed.
Eligibility
Students who completed a semester-long (or longer) independent study project (s) in sociology in the last three semesters (Spring 2023, Fall 2023, early-Spring 2024) are eligible for the award. More than one student can receive this award in a year.
Nomination Process
Nominations must be made by the student’s professor explaining why the nominee is deserving of the award.
Each nomination must include:
- A copy of the paper, project, or presentation.
- A brief nomination letter explaining the merits of this submission.
Nominated projects should meet the following criteria:
- Projects must be original works of academic or public sociology. All forms of research and writing are welcomed.
- All sources must have been cited using a standard, consistent citation format (ASA, MLA, or APA).
- With permission, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ Sociology department would like to publish the winning projects on its website.
A committee made up of at least two Sociology faculty will review the nomination materials and select the awardee or awardees. The award will be announced during Honors Day each spring.
