Golz Fellowships

A generous gift of Ronald Golz, a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ alumnus, in honor of his father, Alfred E. Golz, the Golz Fellowships make funds available to support summer internships for history majors or minors.
Alfred E. Golz fellowships support research opportunities and internships for History majors and minors during the summer months. These fellowships have been made possible by a generous gift from Ronald Golz ’56 in memory of his father. Each fellowship provides a $600/week stipend per student, for eight to ten weeks, and subsidized college housing if applicable.

These fellowships are awarded in two categories:

  • Student-designed projects conducted over a 8-week period, with faculty mentorship. All types of projects are eligible. Projects that build on skills developed in history classes and / or involve innovative technologies such as digital media, mapping etc. are encouraged. Projects should have outcomes commensurate with 8-weeks of work. Some examples might include: a podcast, a research paper, an annotated bibliography of sources, or a graphic representation of data in form of maps or graphs. For student-designed projects, a supporting letter based on this template should be sent to Jen Conner j.conner@bowdoin.edu.
  • Summer internships from 8 to 10 weeks, where students apply the skills, methods and content learned in their history courses (e.g. museums, archives, libraries, living history museums, non-profits). For a summer internship, a letter of commitment from the institution is required.

Requirements for Golz Fellowships:

  • Hours: Students will receive $600 per week and should discuss with their faculty mentors what would be the appropriate duration of their fellowship (8, 9, or 10 weeks) and consider their own research goals and availability as well as their faculty mentors’ availability when making this decision.  By accepting a fellowship you agree to commit 8, 9, or 10 weeks of full-time effort during the summer towards the completion of your proposed project and should refrain from employment during the period of your appointment. No internship may exceed 40 hours per week to comply with wage and hour laws.
  • Projects: Assignments must involve a significant and substantive learning component that enables the student to apply the skills, methods and content learned in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ History courses. All applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from your faculty advisor.
  • For Summer Internships: A summer internship requires submission of information on the organization with which you have requested your fellowship placement, a detailed description of your responsibilities, and the name and title of your summer supervisor.  Employers must provide a letter of commitment stating their willingness to participate in this program and outlining expected internship responsibilities and opportunities for professional growth for the student.  Applicants interested in a summer internship must secure a commitment letter from the sponsoring agency prior to submitting their application.
  • Reporting requirements: Award recipients are required to submit a one-paragraph description and assessment of the fellowship experience to Jen Conner (j.conner@bowdoin.edu) by September 1, 2025, and present their findings with other recipients at a grants and fellowship meeting in the fall.
