Behavioral and Affective Neuroscience

My research interests are at the intersection of brain and behavior and how we can leverage preclinical model systems to understand human emotional [dys]regulation within the context of early life adversity.

Questions we investigate in the Research in Affective and Translational [RAT] Neuroscience Lab include:

  • How is emotional processing and resulting behavior neuroanatomically represented?
  • What are the neural changes that underly affective function as it relates to pathology (i.e., anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, PTSD, etc.)
  • How do early adverse experiences (such as neglect) confer risk/resilience across the lifespan?
  • When (and how) does adversity alter epigenetic (i.e., DNA methylation) trajectories on brain and behavior?
  • Can we utilize ethological stimuli (like rat social communication) to elicit changes in affective behavior in a listening animal to better understand processing of ambiguous threat?
