What is an IRB?
An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee that reviews research studies involving human subjects to ensure that they comply with , , and institutional policies. They play a critical role in ensuring and maintaining the well-being of research participants by protecting their rights and welfare throughout the research process.
What does the IRB do?
- Reviews research protocols to assess potential risk and benefit to participants;
- Reviews the informed consent procedures and documentation to ensure that it is properly obtained from participants or their legal representatives;
- Monitors the progress of research studies to identify any ethical concerns;
- Takes necessary action to protect participants should an issue arise.
