About the session: First-years and sophomores, join Beinecke Scholarship Director Diane Flynn and Beinecke Scholars Joe Moore, Williams '20 and Sydney To, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ '19 for a conversation about the Beinecke scholarship, how it supports student planning graduate study in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, and how to prepare yourself to be strong candidate!  The  provides funding to undergraduates who plan to pursue graduate study in humanities or humanistic social science disciplines and have a demonstrated history of financial aid. Students can apply for nomination for the scholarship in the fall of their junior year. (US citizenship, min. GPA of 3.7 also required.)

• Joe Moore graduated from Williams in 2020 with a major in Comparative Literature. He is currently a master's student at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford. His main areas of interest are the anthropology of Latin America, political theory and socio-legal studies.
• Sydney To is from San Jose, CA. He received his B.A. in English and Philosophy from ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ College in 2019, and is currently a 1st year PhD candidate at UC Berkeley's English department. He is also a Questbridge scholar and was a Fulbright English teaching assistant in Bien Hoa, Vietnam. His research interests are in Asian American literature and critical refugee studies.
• Diane Flynn, MBE: Diane has been the Director of the Beinecke Scholarship program since 2017 and is also in her seventh year serving as the Chair of the NY Region Marshall Scholarship Selection Committee. Her past professional experiences include working as a fellowship advisor at Boston University, strategy consultant in the UK, and space technology transfer expert in the US and Europe. Diane holds an MBA from London Business School and a BS in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is an alumna of the Space Studies Program of the International Space University and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Challenger Center.

The Churchill Scholarship Virtual Info Session is available to view !

About the Churchill Scholarship Program: Each year, the  provides funding to 16 American students from participating schools (which includes ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾) for a year of master’s study in science, mathematics, and engineering at the University of Cambridge. Applicants must be a citizen of the U.S., either native born or naturalized, and be seniors or students who have graduated in the past 12 months. The Churchill Scholarship covers all university-related fees, a living allowance, a travel allowance, and the possibility of a special research grant.

About the session: ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ partnered with Amherst, Middlebury, and Williams to bring you a virtual info session on the Churchill Scholarship. The session features Executive Director of The Winston Churchill Foundation Michael Morse and three current/former Churchill Scholars:

In this video, a Fulbright representative and ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾'s Office of Student Fellowships and Research join together for an interactive Group Presentation Session (GPS) to learn about opportunities for U.S. citizens to pursue graduate or professional study, conduct research, or teach English. Students will learn about the types of Fulbright awards, application components, tips, and get any questions answered.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship

Fellows live in a foreign country for an academic year improving cultural understanding between the U.S. and their host country by teaching students English and actively involving themselves in their host community. Fellows receive round-trip transportation, a living stipend, and other benefits. Seniors and alums are encouraged to apply in early-September.

Fulbright Study/Research Award

Fellows live in a foreign country for an academic year and carry out a self-designed project and typically work with advisors at foreign universities or other institutes of higher learning. Projects are funded in both academic and arts fields. Fellows receive round-trip transportation, a living stipend, and other benefits. Seniors and alums are encouraged to apply in early-September.

The Fulbright Experiences as Black Americans
Panel Discussion is available to view !

Each year, more than a dozen ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ seniors, who are U.S. citizens, apply for and receive a Fulbright award that enables them to pursue graduate or professional study, conduct research, or teach English in a foreign country. On April 15, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ partnered with Amherst, Middlebury, and Williams Colleges to bring you a virtual info session entitled “Fulbright Experiences as Black Americans.” The former Fulbright recipients listed below engaged in a discussion-style format, and encouraged attendees to ask questions.

• Dave Anderson: graduated from Middlebury in 2019. He received a Fulbright research award to Japan.
• Desiree Daring: graduated from Williams College in 2013. She was a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) to Spain in 2017 and a Fulbright mentor in 2018. Desiree is also the co-founder of .
• Yasmina Martin: graduated from Amherst in 2014. She held a research Fulbright to South Africa.
• (tentatively) Curtis “C.J.” Flournoy: graduated from Williams in 2011. He was a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) in South Africa.

The Goldwater Scholarship Virtual Info Session is available to view !

The Goldwater Foundation provides scholarships to undergraduates who plan to pursue research careers in science, math and engineering. Students can apply for nomination for the scholarship in the fall of their sophomore and junior years. Competitive candidates have research experience, a strong academic record, and commitment to research! (US citizenship required; students planning an MD only are not eligible.)

About the session: ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ partnered with Amherst, Middlebury, and Williams to bring you a virtual info session on the Goldwater Scholarship. 

Learn more about our Goldwater Scholar panelists:

• Jea Adams is a senior at Amherst College, majoring in Physics and Astronomy. She is a 2020 Goldwater Scholar who currently works on optimizing software to improve exoplanet detections via direct imaging, and is an advocate for improving the accessibility of STEM education. She has received awards for her research talks and posters in exoplanet detection and star formation. In Fall 2021, Jea will be starting her Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Harvard where she hopes to focus on exploring exoplanet atmospheres. 
• Jing He is a Middlebury College physics alum from the class of 2017. As an undergrad, her interest in environmental science led her to pursue summer research internships around the country, from Vermont to Alaska. She was a NOAA Hollings scholar in 2015 and Goldwater awardee in 2016. After graduating, Jing started a Ph.D. program in oceanography at the MIT-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, where she studies physical dynamics of the ocean and its impacts on the global carbon cycle.
• Liam Taylor is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University. His dissertation research focuses on "avian adolescence" -- in other words, what do young birds get better at, and how that development impacts long-term evolutionary trajectories.  Liam completed his BA in Biology at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ College, followed by fieldwork with Semipalmated Plovers in the subarctic of Churchill, Manitoba and Golden-winged Manakins in the cloud forests of Los Bancos, Ecuador. 

The Marshall Scholarship Info Session is available to view ! 

The  finances young Americans of high academic, leadership, and ambassadorial potential to study for a graduate degree in any field or institution in the UK. 

This recorded session features Marshall Scholarship Alumni for a panel discussion of their experiences studying in the UK, dealing with cultural adjustments, participating in the community of scholars and more. Panelists share how their own backgrounds influenced how they approached and navigated this highly competitive and rewarding opportunity.

Recent ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ alumni who have received the Marshall Scholarship include Bill De La Rosa ’16 and Linda Kinstler ’13, and you can learn more about the eligibility criteria .

The Rhodes Scholarship Virtual Info Session is available to view !

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the oldest and most prestigious fellowships available to U.S. students for two years of graduate study at Oxford University. The committee aims to reward applicants who have demonstrated leadership, intellect, originality and the potential to better society in whatever field they choose to pursue after graduate school.

In this video, two American Assistant Rhodes Secretaries discuss the prestigious post-graduate fellowship at Oxford University, followed by a panel discussion with three Rhodes Scholar alumni. 

This panel discussion featured remarks from Brian McGrail, Williams '14; Jeremy Thomas, Amherst '21;  and Willy Oppenheim, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø±¬ÍøÕ¾ '09 as well as Q&A from current students.
